How your grades are tracking — and, if they slip, what it takes to get back on track.

PJC checks your cumulative GPA at the end of fall and spring. At 2.0 or higher, you’re in good standing, and there’s nothing to do. Below 2.0, you go on Academic Warning — then Probation if it stays below 2.0 a second semester in a row. Nobody is suspended without going through both first.

Summer never puts you on Warning, Probation, or Suspension — but summer grades can pull your cumulative GPA back to 2.0.

Two GPAs — know which is which

Cumulative GPA

  • Includes all your PJC coursework added together — and for a course you’ve repeated, only your highest grade counts.
  • Sets your academic standing overall.

Semester GPA

  • Includes a single semester of courses.
  • Decides whether a semester on probation continues or ends in suspension.

What about W, X or F on my transcript?

  • A W on your transcript is left out of your GPA — it neither helps nor hurts your standing.
  • An X is left out too, but if you don’t finish the work by the end of the next long semester it becomes an F, and that counts.
  • Ws and Xs still counts toward your overall financial aid course count, which measures how many courses you finish.

  • Not an academic standing. Not on your transcript, no hold, no limit on your hours.
  • You’re invited to meet with an advisor or Student Success Coach — in person, by phone, or on Zoom.
  • Tutoring recommended for the course that gave you trouble.

  • Meet with an advisor or Success Coach — required, in person, by phone, or on Zoom.
  • Limited to 12 credit hours unless your coach approves more.
  • At least one tutoring session, recommended. No registration hold at this level.

To clear Warning: Raise your cumulative GPA to 2.0 or higher — fall, spring, or summer. Still below 2.0 after the next fall or spring? You move to Probation.

  • A registration hold is applied until you meet with a Student Success Coach.
  • Build an Academic Success Plan with your coach.
  • Meet with your advisor or coach at least twice, plus a midterm check-in — we ask each instructor for a progress report.
  • Tutoring is required, not suggested.
  • Limited to 12 credit hours unless your coach approves more.

The hold comes off after your midterm review, once your required meetings are done. Schedule early — that hold is what stands between you and registering.

  • You can’t enroll for the next long term. Enrollment you already had is cancelled and a hold is placed on your record.
  • Summer enrollment during a suspension requires written approval from the Vice President for Student Services.
  • Returning is not automatic. Ask for readmission in person with the Vice President for Student Services; if approved, you come back on probation, under the six conditions below.
  • A student suspended twice is normally denied future admission. You can ask the Vice President for Student Services in person for an exception, and that decision is theirs.

Fastest way to raise your GPA
  • Retake failed courses at PJC. Your highest grade becomes the official grade and it’s the only one counted, though every attempt stays on your transcript.
  • Retaking a course somewhere else won’t replace the PJC grade or raise your PJC GPA.
  • A third attempt or more at the same course content is charged a premium tuition rate — look up the 3-Peat Rule before you register.
  • Ask your coach to build repeats into your Academic Success Plan, including over the summer.
